Similar to bad weather swept through the northwest the night before, the home side blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. This outcome represented successive league setbacks for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their title hopes severely dented.

Manchester United's ability to juggle league and European football with a thin squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the schedule, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Unfortunately for the away side, they looked weary all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

The hosts, in contrast, could have added to their cushion when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. After failing to beat any side who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
